Battle Study Package: New Providence Island Raid
New Providence Island Raid
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Continental Navy’s raid on New Providence Island was the first employment of American colonial naval forces and the first amphibious landing by Marines.
TACTICAL IMPORTANCE
During America’s War for Independence from England, a Continental Navy squadron, under the command of Admiral Esek Hopkins, demonstrated its ability to maneuver ships, undetected, along the Atlantic coast to the Caribbean and attack an English fort (with a planned withdrawal). Designed to resolve the issue of gunpowder shortages, the action resulted in the seizure of large quantities of military supplies stored at Fort Montagu in the town of Nassau on the New Providence Island in the Bahamas. Additionally, the Continental Navy projected sea power ashore at the tactical level by employing a Marine landing force, covering its movement with naval gunfire, and successfully withdrawing the landing force.
STRATEGIC IMPACT
The raid expanded the War of Independence outside of the confines of North America and demonstrated the united colonies’ ability to project power overseas. It also laid the groundwork to threaten other British possessions from the Caribbean to Canada and, later, in the United Kingdom and Europe.
